What You Can See at Cano Island

Cano Island is one of the most impressive marine reserves in Costa Rica, known for its clear visibility, protected coral systems, and thriving underwater wildlife. During your Cano Island Snorkeling Tour from Golfito, guests can expect to see a wide range of marine species and natural formations that make this area exceptional.

Colorful Tropical Reef Fish
The reefs surrounding Cano Island are home to parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, pufferfish, snappers, and large schools of baitfish. These vibrant species create the classic tropical snorkeling experience that the island is famous for.

White-Tip Reef Sharks
White-tip reef sharks are commonly seen resting near the sea floor or cruising along the reef. They are calm, non-aggressive, and safe to observe, giving snorkelers one of the most memorable wildlife encounters of the tour.

Sea Turtles
Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are frequently spotted gliding over shallow reefs and feeding along the sandy bottom. This location is known as one of the most consistent turtle-viewing areas in Southern Costa Rica.

Manta Rays and Eagle Rays
Depending on the conditions, snorkelers may see graceful manta rays, spotted eagle rays, and other pelagic species passing through the deeper blue water surrounding the island.

Coral Gardens and Volcanic Formations
Cano Island is a protected marine biological reserve with coral heads, sea fans, volcanic rock shelves, and thriving marine plants. These formations support a dense variety of fish and invertebrates.

Dolphins, Whales, and Marine Life on the Boat Ride
The trip to and from Cano Island often includes sightings of dolphin pods, sea turtles, and seasonal humpback whales. The scenic run along the coastline is a highlight of the experience, offering wildlife encounters before and after the snorkeling itself.

Additional Marine Species You May See
Moray eels, octopus, rays resting on sandy patches, starfish, and larger schooling fish are all commonly observed around Cano Island’s protected zones.

With water visibility that often reaches 50 to 80 feet, Cano Island consistently ranks as one of Costa Rica’s top snorkeling destinations for both beginners and experienced explorers.

The boat ride from Golfito to Caño Island takes approximately 75–90 minutes, depending on weather and sea conditions. During the cruise, you may spot dolphins, sea turtles, or even humpback whales during migration season.

Yes. Cano Island Biological Reserve has strict conservation requirements to protect the ecosystem. Guests must:

  • Avoid touching or standing on coral
  • Keep a respectful distance from all marine life
  • Refrain from collecting shells, rocks, or sand
  • Follow all instructions from the guide

These rules help preserve one of Costa Rica’s most important marine habitats.

Because of the length of the trip we max out at 6 guests so everyone has seating for the ride.

We recommend bringing:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Lightweight long-sleeve rash guard
  • Swimwear
  • Towel
  • Waterproof bag
  • Hat and sunglasses

All snorkeling equipment is included with your tour.
